South Bank Riverside Green
Area 4,000 SQM
Brisbane, Queensland
Under Construction
A great northeast-facing lawn on the Brisbane River was burdened by a series of 1980s post-Expo public structures which had become untenable. As one of the very few large-scale green open spaces to be found anywhere near the CBD, the primary aim was to relieve this Green of its intrusive amenities structures, pushing them out to the peripheries and leaving the existing Green enlarged and unencroached. The result is that public amenities are moved into a new elongated structure expressed as a single, continuous screen attached to a blank service wall to the south of the Green, and barbeque and picnic structures are placed around the edges, interfacing with existing pathways. Of note is that all these structures are designed such that they may be easily disassembled and reassembled in alternative locations should future park programming require. Existing porphyry retaining walls around shady fig trees have also been appropriated as sitting walls and picnic tables by draping a blanket of timber slats over the original structures, resulting in delightful, tree-covered dining spaces on the very edge of the river.
