This modest extension to an existing rural house is conceived as a linear strip of spaces along the northern edge of the house that completes the existing plan by gathering the private spaces in a U arrangement around a public core. The new work is grounded by heavy masonry elements that divide the long, sunbathed northern strip into a series of distinct vestibule-like spaces, and is capped by a light but very insulated steel lid. It includes new sleeping, eating, lounging and studio spaces. A rather odd little courtyard to the south in the existing residence is also enclosed as a Japanese bathing room with private views over an existing lush garden.
